Annual / Perennial : annual for cropping.
Habitat : Originating in the Americas, as a variety of squash, the variety we most commonly enjoy today was created after it was imported from the 'New World'.
Mature Height : By the time the fruit is 30cms long, it is approx.1 m. tall.

Growing : This vegetable (fruit) can reach a length of almost 1m but is more usually harvested when it is less than 25cms. Any longer and it begins to be tougher and less flavoursome. The fresher the better, and especially so if the flower head is still attached. It grows well in a temperate climate. Grow annually from seed. Each plant is able to produce up to 20 pieces of fruit. Sow April to mid May (start in greenhouse) or from mid May to June outside, but protected from any late frost.

More Information : Used as a vegetable it is actually a fruit, being the enlarged ovary of the zucchini flower. The young flower itself, whilst still barely open, features in many recipes either deep fried in batter or in soups etc. It can be eaten raw or cooked.
