Common Name : Aubergine (Eggplant)
Botanical Name : Solanum melongena

Annual / Perennial : Perennial but frequently cultivated as an annual
Habitat : A native of India; originally cultivated in southern and eastern Asia.
Mature Height : 40 to 150 cm (16 to 57 in) tall, with large coarsely lobed leaves that are 10 to 20 cm (4–8 in) long and 5 to 10 cm (2–4 in) broad.

Growing : In tropical & sub-tropical areas the plant can be grown outside. In temperate climates the seeds should be planted in greenhouses about 2 months before planting out when danger of frost has passed.

More Information : Technically a fruit; the edible part is classed as a berry; small in the wild but larger in cultivated plants. The seeds are bitter as the plant is related to the tobacco family.
