So you want to grow your own vegetables; no problem. You can find something to plant in vritually any location, no matter how small it may be. Any vegetable gardener's first questions should be to ask themselves about the ground or pots available, the veg they would ideally like to put on their table and how easy is it to grow a reasonable quantity of them in a limited amount of space. Soil and climate conditions will vary from area to area and some locations may make the growing of certain vegetables that bit more difficult.

Some veg will begin to germinate overnight and may be served on the table in little over a month. Others may take over a week to show their first growth and require the full growing season to produce quality vegetable crops. This can be an important factor when space is very limited and multiple staggered crops should be considered. It can also be important if you are introducing impatient children to the garden. They will probably get more enjoyment if results are tangible, fast and easy to see on a week to week basis. In both these scenarios, a fast growing veg like the humble radish would be more fun and offer a greater yield over the year than carrots, for example.

Another consideration should be the amount of care and attention that various vegetable plants may require. You can't just plant and forget and daily watering at least will be essential for almost every veg garden during the summer. Some veg do best if techniques are employed to mimic the insects and actions of nature. Potatoes (grown from seed potatoes) will offer a much greater yield if the height of soil is gradually increased as the plant grows. Many plants will require support consisting of more than a few garden canes. Peas are relatively low-maintenance but they do require lines or mesh netting to grow up, as do many beans. Cucumbers and other hanging veg often require careful support on the plant. Low growing veg may need straw or sackcloth protection from the ground. Slugs will be eternal attackers of your vegetables and whether your choice of response is chemical pellets, beer trap or picking them off by hand in the moonlight, it will be a time consuming but very necessary task.

A little background research is always to be recommended before planting any seeds. It is always far more rewarding to reap a plentiful crop from a plant suited to its environment than spending a summer trying to coax a patch of ailing plants into growing barely adequate veg. Marrows, spuds and peas certainly won't be suitable for the windowledge and exotic varieties may require particular conditions and attention.
